Research has recorded significant progress in the advancement of renewable energy at night.

As per usual, solar radiation heats the earth’s crust during the day, but after sunsets, that energy is lost into the coldness of space. However, with the advancement of thermal capture technology, the sun’s vast energy may be absorbed at night.

The School of Photovoltaic and Renewable Energy Engineering at UNSW Sydney has successfully tested a device that converts infrared heat into electricity. They generated electricity from heat emitted as infrared light. A power generator known as a “thermo-radiative diode” which was discovered in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, according to Exciton Science Associate Investigator Nicholas Ekins-Daukes, was used by a team of UNSW Sydney scientists, which included members of the ARC Centre of Excellence in Exciton Science. They were able to generate power from the emission of infrared light by using materials such as that found in night-vision goggles.

In simple terms, at sunset, heat absorbed and conserved on the earth’s crust during the day is now converted into electricity by the application of the thermo-radiative principle. In other words, it helps in saving energy to be used at night or during sundown as against energy being stored in a battery.

While this is a remarkable feat, the amount of power generated was minimal at 100,000 times less than that from a solar panel. They are optimistic that in the near future, improvements will be made.
